Three things that my students do to improve the most each week

Wondering how you can make the most of your practice each week? Here are three things that my students do to improve the most each week:

  1. Scales: Practicing scales each week not only improves your motor skills, but also your agility and knowledge of playing in different keys.
  2. Sight reading: With frequent sight reading practice you will be able to learn new pieces faster, understand general patterns of melody and harmony in music, and it will also increase your confidence in your playing!
  3. Practice effectively: We are all eager to learn new songs as quickly as possible, and might think that the quickest way to do this is to practice them at full speed from the beginning. However, if you've never played the piece before, there are inevitably going to be difficult spots where you will have to slow down and work through the notes carefully. If you find yourself playing through a song and tend to stop at one specific measure every time, it might be because you have developed the habit of stopping in that specific place without giving yourself time to learn the notes. Instead of rushing, take time to practice that spot slowly and accurately before speeding up to prevent these habits from forming in the first place.

These are just a few of many tips you can follow to see the biggest improvements each week. Follow us on @cmamusicschool on TikTok and Instagram if you'd like to see more!
