Teacher Association Workshops

Michael Stegner has become a resource for many of the area piano teachers and students. He was a featured clinician at the 2002 and 2004 W.S.M.T.A. (Washington State Music Teachers Associations) conventions, several local chapters and most recently the 2007 MTNA conference in Toronto.

Throughout 2006, Michael has traveled across the United States as a Roland clinician introducing teachers to new concepts in teaching and technology.

Michael has also received grants from the Kentucky school districts and arts councils to lecture students on developing the creative process through music. Here are his current workshops...

Beginning Improvisation -This workshop was developed for the 2002 Washington State Music Teachers Association's annual state convention. This workshop includes basic concepts useful in improvising over many types of music. This workshop includes theory and ear training concepts. This is appropriate for intermediate through advanced levels.

Using Folk Songs to Teach Theory, Rhythm, Harmony and Improvisation - This workshop was developed for the 2004 Washington State Music Teachers Association's annual state convention. This is a great introduction for teachers that want to include more musicianship concepts in their lessons, but don't know where to start. This is appropriate for beginning through intermediate levels.

Helping Students Perform Jazz and Popular Music - This workshop is helpful to teachers that have students with an interest in popular songs or school jazz ensembles. The topics will include stride piano, blues forms, popular music stylings and voicings. This is appropriate for intermediate through advanced levels.

Listening with Open Ears - This is a unique workshop that will challenge us to be a better influence on our students not only as teachers but as people, while also introducing innovative ear-training ideas. Although these ideas sound unrelated, this workshop will make sense. These concepts could change the musical and personal life of the teacher and student.

Everything I Play is Beautiful!" Creating Fearless Performers - This workshop was developed for the 2004 W.S.M.T.A. district meeting in Marysville, Washington. The fear of performing is something that is often unintentionally brought on by music teachers. We have come a long way since the wooden ruler, but we may be encouraging a crippling fear of playing in our students. This is a light and thoughtful way to look at these serious issues, while addressing some interesting tips on memorization and technical control over the piano. This is appropriate for all levels.
